Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Thinning Hair can occur in humans because of various factors like age, weak hormone generation, weak protein content, improper diet etc. People who wish to prevent hair loss should understand the problem which caused the hair loss and take hair loss treatment properly. Age is an important factor which should be taken into consideration while predicting the cause for hair loss. Most of the people, loose their hair when they grow old. Its always better for people to consult a doctor and take treatment accordingly.

Before understanding the cause for hair loss, here are some hairs thinning patterns which will let you know what type of hair loss you have. In most of the women hair begins to thin in the area where she parts her hair. Though she does not recognize the change in hair line, she will see more hair in her comb. The height should be adjustable according to the desk height. It should have sufficiently padded arm and back rests too.

For regular use, good quality office chairs are very essential. If the chairs are required for a brief period of time and only occasionally, then banquet chairs should be stacked somewhere and brought to the room when required. These banquet chairs come in an array of colors and materials to choose from. They weigh very less and since they are stackable, they can be transported easily using carts.

Apple snubs ‘breasts-jiggling’ iPhone application

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Apple’s online App Store has snubbed a new iPhone application, named “iBoobs”, that lets users jiggle a pair of breasts.According to the U.K.’s Register tech blog, Apple rejected the application deeming it “objectionable content.”

Apple asked the creator, Mystic Game Development of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, to change the application to suit the acceptable conditions.

“If you believe that you can make the necessary changes so that iBoobs does not violate the iPhone SDK Agreement we encourage you to do so,” Fox News quoted Apple as telling the creators.

The iBoobs application is a computer animation of a large pair of breasts in a bikini top, and a user can shake the iPhone to wobble the boobs from side to side, or up and down, depending on the movement.

Apparently the company developed the saucy application to demonstrate character animation middleware, theorized the Register.

Mystic’s main business is developing 3-D rendering engines for video-game developers.

The Extras of Mortgage Marketing

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

The concept of mortgage marketing should be pretty simple. If you are in real estate, then you need to do everything that you can to pick up some clients. This should be simple at least. Everyone who’s tried it should know that it is much more difficult in practice.

Part of the problem comes in the extras that happen. You can’t just advertise. You need to reel them into the business. You need to capture the leads that you secure. This could mean a number of things. There are a few automated systems that you can set up to handle your leads and ensure that they stay interested as the days pass. You could also do it the old-fashioned way and call them up yourself. It will depend on just what you like to when you are running your business.

This is just one of the little extras that happen regularly in mortgage loan marketing. If you are trying to bring in new people, then you have to be ready to try some new things and listen to the advice of the experts. You will be happy in the long run and find that it was well worth the minor cost. Your business should be the better for it.

Co-location Server Hosting

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

In business terms co-location which is also called as collocation or co-location is nothing but a group of entities in a single location where as in computing it refers to installing application to run a data in a single process. There are good examples for this co-location such as virtualization, web hosting etc.

Another concept where a single computer can dedicate to your necessities is nothing but dedicated hosting which gives you increase in speed, control and space and is also more flexible than shared hosting. In fact the server administration is usually provided by the hosting company as the add-on service. Regarding operating system dedicated hosting supports any operating service on basis of the particular dedicated server plan.

One of the major advantages of dedicated server hosting is that it has got high powered networks from multiple providers and that is why people often choose this option as outsource. One of the major benefits of dedicated server is reliability because of its cost effective way of using more than one domain and the other major benefit is security which keeps your applications secure unlike a shared web hosting service where there is a chance of making your applications open to see.

Bad maths led to fiery doom for Beagle 2 in 2003

Friday, December 19th, 2008

An Australian team of hypersonics engineers has suggested that a flawed calculation probably resulted in Beagle 2 tumbling out of control as it descended in 2003.According to a report in New Scientist, mystery surrounds the loss of contact with the Beagle 2 spacecraft, which had entered the Martian atmosphere on Christmas Day 2003.

Until now, the loss of the probe has been attributed to the general failings of a poorly funded mission.

Despite an exhaustive enquiry by the European Space Agency, no single cause for the loss of the 50 million dollars spacecraft has been identified.

Beagle 2 was designed to self-stabilise during its descent through the Martian atmosphere. his was to be achieved through careful design of the spacecraft’s aerodynamics and centre of gravity, and by spinning the craft as it was released from the European Space Agency’s Mars Express orbiter.

This generated a gyroscopic force for correcting wobbles as it descended.

The ideal spin rate was difficult to determine because the forces on a spacecraft change sharply as it plunges from the thin upper atmosphere to the denser gas closer to the surface.

The Beagle 2 team simulated the forces in both these regimes but could not afford to simulate the way the forces change during the transition between the two.

Instead, they estimated the forces using a mathematical process called a bridging function, and settled on a rate of 14 revolutions per minute.

After Beagle 2’s disappearance, hypersonics experts Michael Macrossan and Madhat Abdel-Jawad at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, simulated the transition.

They reckon it is now clear that Beagle 2 was spinning too fast.

The spin rate would have corrected any problems in the thin upper atmosphere but as the atmosphere thickened, it would have worked against the self-stabilising aerodynamic forces the craft was generating.

As a result, the spacecraft probably tumbled out of control and burned up just seconds after dropping into the atmosphere.

“The spin rate was just too high,” said Abdel-Jawad. “It counteracted the stabilisation you’d expect,” he added.

The Mars probe probably burned up seconds after entering the atmosphere.

According to Colin Pillinger, the planetary scientist at the UK’s Open University, Milton Keynes, who led the Beagle 2 team, “It’s an interesting analysis and we are going to run their figures through our own model to see if they are right.”

Labels try to understand fans better with own sites

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

After years of watching everyone from Apple Inc to YouTube develop profitable and close relationships with music fans, major record labels have been quietly making a big push to understand who buys their music.

The labels are betting that owning the music fan relationship will be key in their ongoing struggle to turn around dwindling sales of music after nearly a decade of being ravaged by digital piracy on the Web and CD copying.

EMI said on Wednesday it was taking the wraps off its long-rumored EMI.com consumer portal for U.S. and UK fans, featuring options for them to discover both new and archive music and videos from their favorite EMI artists.

The music company, whose artists include Coldplay, Kylie Minogue and Queen, described the new site as a “learning lab.”

“It will help us gain even more knowledge about consumers’ preferences,” EMI executive Alex Haar said in a statement.

London-based EMI is somewhat late to the game in launching a group consumer site. Its larger rivals all have group or label sites like Vivendi’s Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment’s MyPlay.com and Warner Music Group’s Atlantic Records.

As CD sales have plummeted in recent years, labels have often been criticized for not knowing who their customers are, enabling a transfer of power to partners like Apple’s iTunes and Amazon.com. This was seen as bad practice in a business environment where customer data became vital for making key decisions.

Attitudes have begun to change at major labels, who have started appointing executives with experience in consumer marketing and digital to top positions. For instance, EMI this year appointed former Reckitt Benckiser executive Elio Leoni-Sceti as chief executive of recorded music and Douglas Merrill, a former Google executive, as president of digital.

Executives said that the need to understand what fans want and how they want it has become a crucial part of the way a music label is run today.

These executives insisted that the motivation for owning the fan relationship is not about cutting out the retailer or building intrusive databases but will instead grow new forms of revenue such as advertising, tickets and merchandise.

“We create products and we create platforms and we can go direct-to-consumer, which is free for the fan, but the B2B (business-to-business) part is where we make our shekels,” said a person familiar with Universal Music Group’s plans.

Universal, the world’s largest music company, aggregates its advertising scale across universalmusic.com and 300 artist sites such as U2.com, blackeyedpeas.com and others.

This is a long way from the label’s traditional role as wholesaler with little or no relationship with the fans. In the past the labels discovered an artist, created an artist brand and product and then only earned revenue by selling records.

Warner Music, the No. 3 music company, said a third of its artist roster is now signed to 360-degree deals that go beyond recording rights to include fan websites, merchandise and other media products for example.

“You have to go to where the consumers are, be it MySpace, YouTube or fan sites and you have to monetize every part of the chain,” said another music executive who asked not to be named.

Gastric Bypass Success Sparks Debate

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Recent studies showing that gastric bypass surgery extends the lives of obese patients is forcing surgeons to make tough decisions about who should go under the knife and who shouldn’t.Internists, cardiologists and endocrinologists, more than ever, are referring patients who traditionally haven’t been candidates for the weight-loss surgery, also called bariatric surgery.

“I am being asked to operate on 78-year-olds with co-morbidities of heart disease and diabetes,” said Dr. Edward H. Phillips, executive vice chairman of the Department of Surgery and a surgeon at the Center for Weight Loss at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Phillips questions whether these patients will benefit, or if the damage has already been done.

“So, while it is obvious a 30-year-old will benefit, at what age is too old?” he asked.

The success of gastric bypass is also stoking debate about its use as a treatment for type 2 diabetes. Mounting evidence suggests this type of surgery may dramatically improve patients with the disease, freeing them from a lifetime of diabetes medications.

“There’s more acceptance now of the concept that bariatric surgery is a truly life-saving type of therapy rather than just a way to shed pounds,” said Dr. Francesco Rubino, chief of Gastrointestinal Metabolic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.

Still, more long-term studies are needed, and clinicians and policymakers must reach a consensus on who should have access to this type of surgery, noted Rubino, who directed the 1st World Congress on Interventional Therapies for Type 2 Diabetes, held in New York City in September.

An estimated 205,000 bariatric surgeries were performed in the United States in 2007, according to the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). That’s an increase of almost 20 percent from two years earlier.

If patients commit to making necessary changes in their diet and exercise regimens, gastric bypass surgery can provide long-term, consistent weight loss, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Not only does it help shed pounds, but a pair of studies published last year in the New England Journal of Medicine found that it can help obese people live longer.

One study, led by Ted Adams of the University of Utah School of Medicine, tracked almost 16,000 obese people, half of whom had weight-loss surgery. After an average of seven years, the death rate was 40 percent lower for people who had the surgery compared with those who didn’t. Diabetes-related deaths were cut by a whopping 92 percent.

The other study, led by a Swedish team, involved more than 6,000 obese patients. After an average follow-up of more than a decade, those who had bariatric surgery were 29 percent less likely to die than those who did not undergo surgery.

Age is not necessarily a barrier, another study suggests. In a review of 1,065 bariatric surgeries performed from 2001 to 2005, researchers at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa., found that people 60 and older had comparable safety and effectiveness results as those under 60.

But Phillips isn’t convinced it’s the right thing to do for people pushing 80.

“The likelihood of extending their lives is unknown,” he said, noting that they’ve already reached their life expectancy. “Also, if a complication occurs, they can’t survive it.”

And despite the life-extending benefits that the surgery may provide, every patient must proceed with caution.

“I would still strongly advise patients considering bariatric surgery to consider the risks associated with surgery in relation to the risks associated with excessive body weight,” Adams said. “There should be careful assessment of the pros and cons of surgery and the pros and cons of remaining severely obese.”
