Actor Ledger’s insurance firm sued over nonpayment

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Heath Ledger’s insurance company has been sued in Los Angeles for not paying out $10 million in benefits to his daughter, claiming the actor may have committed suicide, according to court papers. The 28-year-old Australian star of “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Dark Knight” was found dead in his New York apartment in January in what officials ruled was an accidental death from an overdose of painkillers and other medicines.

But lawyers for the ReliaStar insurance company, where Ledger took out a life insurance policy in 2007, have claimed his death was suspicious and possibly a suicide. That would nullify the policy, said the court papers posted on celebrity website TMZ.com.

Ledger’s daughter with actress Michelle Williams, Matilda Rose, 3, was named as the beneficiary in the policy, insurance specialist lawyer William Shernoff said on Monday.

“ReliaStar want to investigate the possibility of suicide, and we think that is inappropriate because the coroner’s report and all the official reports say it was accidental,” said Shernoff, who filed the suit on behalf of Ledger’s daughter in July.

“It is distressing for everybody. The insurance company wants to spend months, if not years, investigating this so they can hold on to their money,” Shernoff told Reuters.

A ReliaStar spokesman said the company was still investigating the claim on the policy and had not yet made a decision.

The company said in court filings it was entitled to investigate because Ledger died within two years of taking out the policy, and accused the other side of failing to cooperate.

News of the legal dispute came after Ledger’s father told Australia’s Sunday Times that the actor’s estate, with an estimated value of $20 million Australian (US $16 million), would go to his daughter.

Vidya Balan takes acting lessons from Naseeruddin

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Bollywood actress Vidya Balan is doing every bit that she can to deliver her best in Vishal Bharadwaj’s ‘Ishqiya’. For this, she even joined a 10-day workshop with her co-star Naseeruddin Shah.’The character that Vidya is playing in ‘Ishqiya’ is very complex and difficult to enact. Vidya thought that the way to emote the character on screen was best learnt from Naseeruddin Shah because the veteran actor is a master at it,’ a source close to the actress said.

‘She was ecstatic to be discussing cinema with the master himself. Though they ended up discussing the film and cinema at length instead of doing a serious workshop, Vidya treasures the experience and is looking forward to working with the actor in the film,’ added the source.

Vidya, who stars opposite Arshad Warsi in the film, is not only taking lessons from Naseer but also also underwent classes to speak the typical Uttar Pradesh dialect during those 10 days.

‘Vidya was just not familiar with the native that kind of Hindi. She mastered it by getting a teacher,’ said the source.

Yousuf to face life ban if he joins ICL

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Pakistan will not hesitate to impose a life ban on its premier batsman Mohammad Yousuf if he joined the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL), a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official warned Thursday. The PCB official told IANS on the condition of anonymity that Yousuf will be treated like the rest of the ‘rebel’ cricketers if he plays in ICL.

‘We have banned all our cricketers, who joined the ICL and if Yousuf will also play for the unauthorized league then he will have to face the same punishment,’ the official said.

Yousuf, who is regarded among the world’s best batsmen, is considering joining the ICL after it became clear that he doesn’t feature in Pakistan’s one-day and Twenty20 plans. Pakistan selectors consider Yousuf as a specialist Test batsman and are unlikely to consider him for national duty in next month’s four-nation Twenty20 tournament in Canada.

Yousuf, however, believes that he can be equally useful in the shorter version of the game and feels insulted for being overlooked for Pakistan duty.

The Lahore-based player almost defected from the Pakistan ranks after being axed from the national team for the inaugural World Twenty20 Championship in South Africa last September. Then, he decided to join the ICL. But even after signing a deal with the ICL, Yousuf made a u-turn and tried to sign up for the official Indian Premier League (IPL) with the help of the PCB. However, the ICL sued Yousuf over the change of heart and in the end he was unable to play in either league.

Sources said that Yousuf is now expecting an out of court settlement with the ICL and is ready to play for the league.

But the PCB official warned that Yousuf will have no future with Pakistan if he took such a step.

‘Yousuf is still our best Test batsman and has a future with the Pakistan team but not if he joins the ICL. It will be game over for him if he joined the rebel league,’ he said.

‘Equus’ creator says Radcliffe’s naked scenes ‘not porn’

Friday, September 12th, 2008

The creator of Daniel Radcliffe starrer ‘Equus’ is reportedly irate with the actor’s naked scene being dubbed as ‘porn’.Peter Shaffer is not happy with the hype centred around the full frontal scene, as according to him, the build-up has overshadowed his work.

“I was irritated that people talked on and on about it. It was so infantile. In the papers, I was always reading about how Harry Potter is ‘waving his other wand’,” Telegraph quoted Shaffer, as telling the New York Post.

“There is a great deal more going on in the play, you know. I’m not writing porn, for God’s sake!” he added.

However, the 82-year-old playwright was full of praise for Radcliffe’s performance.

“Dan’s like a naked little animal, so vulnerable, shuddering against the bars,” he said.

Radcliffe, 19, will make his Broadway debut in the play, in which he portrays a troubled psychiatric patient who blinds six horses.

Radcliffe recently said of the West End furore: “Offended mothers were calling up and saying I shouldn’t be doing this, that they weren’t going to go see it. OK, don’t see it.

“They’re treating it like it’s pornography and it’s not. It’s only seven minutes at the end of the play when I’m naked, and I’m 19 now.”

Actors, advertisers extend commercials contract

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Two actors unions and the U.S. advertising industry said Monday they agreed to extend a contract covering commercials on TV, radio, the Internet and other new media by six months through March.

The extension gives the Screen Actors Guild extra time to finished stalled talks with Hollywood studios over a contract covering prime-time TV shows and movies that expired in June. Actors continue to work under the terms of the old deal.

Both the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists held a six-month commercials strike in 2000 that drove work overseas.

The extension comes on top of a two-year extension agreed to in 2006.

At that time, the advertising industry and the unions commissioned Booz Allen Hamilton to study new compensation models for performers to deal with the shift of ads to the Internet and other new media. The study was completed early this year.

In March, SAG and AFTRA acrimoniously ended 27 years of joint negotiations with studios over movies and prime-time TV shows in a spat over jurisdiction and the makeup of the bargaining team.

SAG and AFTRA have yet to decide formally whether to jointly bargain on the commercials contract.

The ad industry is represented by a joint committee of the Association of National Advertisers and the American Association of Advertising Agencies.
